Boxers
- The focus of Boxer heart screening is subaortic stenosis and other congenital cardiac disease.
- They should be screened at a minimum age of 1 year by auscultation and examination.
- Echocardiography should be performed if a grade 2/6 or louder murmur is present.
- Measure the AVERAGE aortic velocity over 5 cardiac cycles
The results for aortic stenosis assessment should be interpreted as follows :
Aortic velocity (m/s) |
Other findings |
Result |
< 2 |
None |
Normal |
>2 |
Visibly anxious, no lesions |
Equivocal |
>2 |
Visible lesions |
Abnormal |
>2 |
Calm, no lesions |
Abnormal |
Findings (lesions) associated with aortic stenosis are :
-
- More than trivial aortic insufficiency
- The presence of a sub valvular aortic ridge
- A step up in velocity of more than 0.5m/s when pulsed wave doppler is used proximal to the aortic valve, at the aortic valve and distal to the aortic valve.
